High surf prompts brown water advisory | News, Sports, Jobs
North-facing shores of Molokai and Maui as well as west-facing shores of Molokai are under a high surf advisory through 6 a.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
Waves were expected to reach 18 to 22 feet Wednesday evening along north shores and decline to 12 to 16 feet this morning before rising again in the afternoon. Along west-facing shores, waves were predicted to decline from 12 to 18 feet on Wednesday evening to 8 to 12 feet this morning before also rising again in the afternoon.
The state Department of Health issued a brown water advisory from Waihee to Maliko after high surf sent coastal waters into foliage and other areas above the normal high-water mark, including roadways.
The department advised the public to stay out of coastal waters that appear brown due to possible runoff containing pesticides and other chemicals, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens and debris.
