Roger Moore was an English actor, producer, philanthropist, and author. He was best known for his lead role as “James Bond” in seven Bond films. His television credits include Ivanhoe, Maverick, The Saint, and The Persuaders. He was knighted by The Queen of England in 2003. Roger George Moore was born on October 14, 1927, in Stockwell, London. His mother, Lillian, was a housewife, and his father, George, a policeman. He was an only child. Moore attended Battersea Grammar School in South London followed by Launceston College school. He also studied at Dr. Challoner’s Grammar School, College of the Venerable Bede, and at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Moore spent roughly 3 years in the Royal Army Service Corps before taking up acting full time. He rose to the title of captain.

Moore appeared as an extra in early films like Caesar and Cleopatra (1945) and Trottie True (1949). He signed with MGM in the mid-1950s and appeared in such films as Interrupted Melody (1955), The King’s Thief (1955), and Diane (1956). He starred as “Michael” in the Warner Bros. film, The Mirachel (1959). Moore dominated the small screen from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. He starred as “Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe” in Ivanhoe (1958-59), as “Silky Harris” in The Alaskans (1959-60), and as “Beau Maverick” in Maverick (1960-61). He rose to stardom with the role of “Simon Templar” in the adaptation of The Saint (1962-69). The series was based on Leslie Charteris’ novels. He was also featured in the series ‘The Persuaders (1971-72)’ alongside famed actor Tony Curtis.

Moore landed the coveted role as “James Bond” in Guy Hamilton’s, Live and Let Die (1973). The role of Bond was previously held by Scottish actor Sean Connery. Moore reprised the role of Bond in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), Moonraker (1979), For Your Eyes Only (1981), Octopussy (1983), and A View to a Kill (1985). He retired from the Bond film series in 1985. Moore’s other films include Bullseye! (1990) with Michael Caine, The Quest (1996) with Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Spice World (1997) with Victoria Beckham.

In addition to acting, Moore has written a handful of books. His publications include Roger Moore as James Bond 007 (1973), My Word Is My Bond (2008), Bond on Bond: Reflections on 50 Years of James Bond (2012) and Last Man Standing (2014). Moore was tapped as Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF in 1991. He was honored with the International Humanitarian Award in 2000. His star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.
